The deeper the foundation, the higher the building… The UP Association of Civil Engineering Students (UP ACES) towers above the rest, being one of the oldest organizations in the UP College of Engineering. As the premier student organization in the UP Institute of Civil Engineering, UP ACES continuously provides venues for the student’s academic excellence, holistic development and professional growth.
UP ACES is the pioneer of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers – UP Diliman Student Chapter (PICE-UPD). As such, UP ACES coordinates with entities such as the studentry of the Institute of Civil Engineering, the administration of the College of Engineering and the bigger and more popular body of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE). In further preparation for nation-building and governance, UP ACES actively contributes to the college’s Engineering Student Council (ESC). This year, one of four ESC Councilors and four of five CE Representatives come from UP ACES.
UP ACES proudly hosts the National Civil Engineering Summit during September. A one-of-a-kind and week-long celebration of influential events organized by students for practitioners and fellow students, the highlights of the summit are the National Civil Engineering Quiz, currently on its 20th year, and the National CE Symposium, at the same time on its 6th year, in which over 2,000 students and professionals participate and take pride.
Why We are Here
UP ACES does not take one’s academics for granted, nor does it leave one’s ethics and professionalism undeveloped. UP ACES recognizes that a high score (e.g. general weighted average) is not enough to define excellence which is why it immerses its members in formative activities, thereby turning them into fine leaders and team players. The organizations attempts, and does so well, to break the stigma of the incapability of engineering students to express and communicate themselves by involving its members in seminars (i.e. power speaking, corporate writing, self-packaging), tutorials (i.e. Photoshop, Flash) and outreach actvities (i.e. Gawad Kalinga, Camp Pag-ibig for Special Children), among others. The culture of UP ACES is intended to complement the average yet healthy student life.
