The 2011 National Civil Engineering Summit was off to a great start, with our opening mass presided over by Fr Peter. His pleasant disposition during the mass, and the enthusiastic and rousing homily set a light and positive mood to the 57th anniversary of the University of the Philippines Association of Civil Engineering Students. His message of selfless service was inspiring, yet wrapped in a humorous anecdote that certainly got our attention. After the mass, Fr. Peter joined the UP ACES members in the blessing of the beautiful CE exhibit, spouting generous blessings as he threw copious amounts of holy water.

We were joined at the Ribbon Cutting by Dr. Alexis A. Acacio, the newly-appointed Director of the Institute of Civil Engineering. Immediately after the Ribbon Cutting was the UP ACES Grand Pakain, and over 450 people came to partake of the organization’s celebration. It was a momentous occasion, with students, and faculty members from all over the college of engineering coming together to join in on the festivities.

Last September 2, UP ACES launched the much-anticipated National Civil Engineering Symposium 2010, entitled Impulse: The Forefront of Change in Civil Engineering, at the University Theater, at UP Diliman. It catered to more than 2,100 participants from all over the country.
With global warming and climate change as the world’s leading problems, will our technology today provide us with structures that can serve the next generation? Or should we start changing our standards today?

What steps must the government take to be at par with global advancements in science and technology? Now, with the increasing number of students entering the different fields of Engineering, and with support from the nation, will there be an improvement in the country’s status oin terms of research and development?

Each year, we see thousands of engineers leaving the country, searching for greener pastures abroad. Does this mean that the Philippines ahs less to offer? Or does this mean we have less to offer our country?

The symposium tries to answer these questions by presentations from prominent civil engineers on the event’s three main topics—Improve: Disaster Risk Management, Explore: CE Research and Development and Serve: The CE Way.

The speakers of the symposium were (in order of presentation) Dr. Guillermo Tabios III, head of the National Hydraulics Research Institute, Undersecretary for the Department of Public Works and Highways Raul Asis and Engr. Robert Michael Baffrey, Wastewater Department Manager of Manila Water.

Winners from CE Undergraduate Project Competition also proudly presented their theses in front of the symposium’s audience. Simultaneous with the second half of the symposium are CE Laboratory Tour and CE Workshop, where they applied what they have learned from the symposium.

The presentations of the main speakers are available for download here. More pictures at the National CE Summit Facebook page.

The Highschool Career Talk, which aims to expose Highschool Students on the different fields of Civil Engineering, had four speakers. Engr. Cherry Mae Mateo discussed problems and challenges of current environmental issues, and the solutions provided by the field of Environmental Engineering. Engr. Jaylord Tan Tian delved into the specifics of Geotechnical Engineering, its different specializations and the professions that had sprouted from the field. For Water Resources and Transportation Engineering, the speakers were Engr. Robert Michael Baffrey and Engr. Sandy Mae Gaspay, respectively.

Winners from the bridge building competition are as follows: Paco Catholic School, Makati Hope High School and Grace Christian High School for first, second and third place, respectively. The said competition had 21 teams from different schools as participants, with UP ACES alumni Engr. Cherry Mae Mateo and Engr. Diocel Harold Aquino, as well as UP College of Engineering graduate, Engr. Jaylord Tantian as judges.
