Events for High School Students During National CE Summit 2010

Last September 1, 2010, UP ACES held the InCEthink: Bridge Building Competition and Career Talk both for Highschool students around Metro Manila.

The Highschool Career Talk, which aims to expose Highschool Students on the different fields of Civil Engineering, had four speakers. Engr. Cherry Mae Mateo discussed problems and challenges of current environmental issues, and the solutions provided by the field of Environmental Engineering. Engr. Jaylord Tan Tian delved into the specifics of Geotechnical Engineering, its different specializations and the professions that had sprouted from the field. For Water Resources and Transportation Engineering, the speakers were Engr. Robert Michael Baffrey and Engr. Sandy Mae Gaspay, respectively.

Winners from the bridge building competition are as follows: Paco Catholic School, Makati Hope High School and Grace Christian High School for first, second and third place, respectively. The said competition had 21 teams from different schools as participants, with UP ACES alumni Engr. Cherry Mae Mateo and Engr. Diocel Harold Aquino, as well as UP College of Engineering graduate, Engr. Jaylord Tantian as judges. InCEthink aims to promote CE awareness among secondary education students, by building model bridges using barbeque sticks attached with glue. Each team were given four hours to construct a bridge, and improvisational incremental loading were used to test each bridge. By Genarro Pascual 07B
